This group was particuarly
instrumental in forming the popular system The Well, based in southern
California. The Well, which was originally a project of the Whole Earth Catalog
publishers, attracts a clientele that clearly fits the "counterculture" label.
Also significant in this trend is the growing political power in the CMC arena
of people like John Perry Barlow (lyricist for the Grateful Dead) and Howard
Rheingold(editor of the Whole Earth Review).
As new printed guides to using CMC systems such as the
Internet are developed, they are increasingly including sections on
"netiquette," or normative behavior (Angell & Heslop, 1994; Dern, 1993).
This in and of itself may well signify a cultural shift taking place in the
context of CMC; it will certainly require additional analysis as part of this
