K-12 Resources List

The Internet is a wonderful resource for K-12 students and teachers. Here are some of our favorite sites for the under 18 crowd and the folks who have to help them navigate cyberspace.

  1. The World-Wide Web Virtual Library: Education
One of the W3 Virtual Libraries, this site is an excellent source of all types of educational information. It is searchable, with indexes by educational level, type of resources, and country.

  2. Ask ERIC Virtual Library
The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a federally-funded national information system that provides access to an extensive body of education-related literature. ERIC provides a variety of services and products at all education levels. The AskERIC Virtual Library provides free access to a wide variety of resources that were formerly only available in print, or on expensive online services, if at all. The graphics are pretty big, though, so if you're on a slow connection you might want to turn images off before connecting.

  3. CEARCH: The Cisco Educational Archive
A former PC Magazine Top 100 WWW site, this archive has pointers to a variety of resources related to K12 networking, and a search interface to let you find specific materials quickly. There are a lot of ads for Cisco, the sponsor, but other than that it's a good site.

  4. EdWeb
An educational resource guide specifically written for K-12 use. Focusing on the interconnection of education reform and information technology, the guide provides numerous examples of how networking and computers have affected the classrooms of today, as well as those of tomorrow. Additionally, the guide dissects the issues of networking technology, policy, and planning in language that any non-programmer or scientist could understand. Finally, the guide offers an extensive collection of Internet and on-line resource information.

  5. Kids' Space
A site with all kinds of fun things for kids. Especially creative is the Story Book, which allows children to post and share their own stories.

  6. Online Educational Resources
An extensive and well-organized list of K-12 resources (with an emphasis on science) maintained by the High Performance Computing and Communications project at NASA.

  7. School.Net from Educational Online Sources
A wide variety of pointers and helpful files for teachers, students, and administrators. Recently remodeled, they are adding new and useful sites to the page. You may also register your school's online "success story."

  8. Sendit K-12 Resources
A great list of reources from North Dakota's Educational Network. It also includes the Hotlist of K-12 Internet Sites, Internet-connected K-12 schools maintained by Gleason Sackman. Gleason is also moderator of the net-happenings mailing list sponsored by the InterNIC.

  9. U.S. Department of Education
An excellent resource for K-12 teachers and educators. Includes information about the Department of Education, as well as extensive lists of educational resources on the Internet.

  10. Web66
A project of the University of Minnesota's School of Education, this server sets out to: (1) help K12 educators learn how to set up their own WWW Internet servers; (2) link K12 WWW servers and the educators and students at those schools, and (3) help K12 educators find and use K12 appropriate resources on the WWW. The Web66 server includes: Classroom Internet Server Cookbook, Web66 SharePages, the Web66 Mailing List, and the Web66 What's New Page.
