ITCS: Internet Training and Consulting Services

Top Ten
News Media Resources List

This list was initially developed to assist students participating in the newspaper project that is part of the PACERS rural education cooperative. However, we thought it had wider applicability. What we've tried to provide is a sampling of some of the best online news resources--both general-purpose news-related sites, and examples of excellent Internet-based newspaper services.

News Resources

  1. Editor & Publisher News
From one of the industry's best-known publishers, this nicely-designed online news site includes feature stories and commentary related to online and traditional news publishing and journalism.

  2. John Makulowich's Journalism List Redux
An excellent collection of network resources selected by a journalist and Internet trainer, and designed specifically for use by journalists and other news media professionals. Covers topic areas from Asian Studies to 'Zines.

  3. Media E-Mail Directory
This list, developed by a "right-to-die" organization, contains e-mail contact information for wide range of journalists, editors, and publications.

  4. Newspaper Association of America
This well-designed site includes an extensive "hotlist" of newspaper-related resources online, as well as association files, and an interesting publication called Digital Edge. The latter, unfortunately, is only available to NAA members; if you are one, be sure to take a look!

  5. Student Press Server
This server includes links to three useful resources--a "Journalist's Toolbox" of interesting news-related Internet sites, the National Scholastic Press Association server, and the Associated Collegiate Press Server.

  6. Vanderbilt Television News Archive
Includes abstracts of all network news broadcasts, as well as specialized news collections. Excellent resource for journalists and students of broadcast journalism.

Exemplary
News Publications

  1. CNN Online
CNN provides constantly updated news information on their site, including text stories, photographs, and even video clips. An excellent resource for up-to-the minute news online.

  2. National Public Radio
Not willing to wait for a tape of yesterday's All Things Considered to be mailed to you? Connect to NPR's web site and listen to broadcast using RealAudio technology. Or browse through information about programs, personalities, and other topics related to the news and entertainment offerings.

  3. Pathfinder
Time, Inc. has placed content from their weekly publications (Time, People, and Money, among others) online, along with daily news updates and other news services. The graphics are large and complex, which makes this site tough with a slow connection, but it's worth at least one look despite the wait.

  4. USA Today
Like CNN, USA Today updates their site constantly with breaking news, including text, photographs, and illustrations. They also include comprehensive weather coverage. The similarities between the CNN and USA Today sites provide an interesting illustration of the convergence of print and television media in the Internet environment.
